The Molding and Casting Process
by Peter Revelman from Paradoxx Molding
stage one
The fruit is placed on the work surface so that the join line is horizontal to the work surface. It is positioned on the high side for better access. Small logs of clay are placed in and around the fruit to support and locate it. |
stage two
Additional clay is added in layers, building up towards the join line and out to the parameters of the finished mold. This work is done in small pieces to a level a couple of millimeters below the join line. |
stage three
Longer lengths of clay are flattened out to about 3mm thick and lain on top of the clay frame work, covering the entire surface. These strips are run together creating one surface. |
stage four
A box is built around the clay work, its walls rising above the fruit to the level required for the finished mold. The clay is connected to the walls of the box. |
stage five
With the first pour of silicon set, the box is deconstructed. |
stage six
Silicon, clay and fruit ( as one piece ) must be turned 180 degrees in a smooth action so as not to disturb any of the 3 materials. The clay is carefully removed. It is imperative not to break the airtight seal between the fruit and the silicon. |
